The Monster Energy Big 12 Media Days continued Wednesday afternoon with the Cincinnati Bearcats as one of the teams under the microscope. Bearcats quarterback JC French IV was expected to be a topic of discussion and definitely was. Bearcats ' head coach Scott Satterfield had a lot of praise for the Senior transfer from Georgia Southern, expecting a big season.
"We tried to find a guy that fit what we wanted to do, and JC was out there. A couple of things that we like about JC, he ended up being the all-time leading passer in Georgia Southern school history, and he's a guy who has a lot of great experience."
French IV spent the last three seasons playing for the Georgia Southern Eagles, passing for 5,882 yards, 38 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. He added 602 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns across that period, while being sacked 59 times in his career. Something that he likely will benefit from is the Power 4 facilities, the Bearcats' offensive line, and an offense that is tailored to his playing style. French shares a lot of the same physical attributes as the former quarterback Brendan Sorsby, but doesn't rely on his legs in key moments; he falls back on his arm.
Last season, French finished with 2,929 passing yards, passing for 20 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He had a 63.8% completion percentage, which does raise questions, but Satterfield's offense is known to be headlined by shorter passes. French had 315 rushing yards last season and 6 rushing touchdowns on 133 carries, averaging 2.4 yards per carry. He did get sacked 29 times last season, which is sure to go down. The Eagles went 7-6 last season with a record of 4-4 of in the Sun Belt, winning the East division. French seemed to play well down the stretch in games, but the largest concern for players like this is always how well they will translate into the Power 4. Will it be Immediate or will it take time?
