RECRUITING RANKINGS EXPLAINED

247 Sports

By far the hardest working and most accurate recruiting site on the Net. If there are ever any questions about current prospects, I go to 247 Sports first. They are a relatively young site who only started evaluating, rating, and ranking recruits just a couple of years ago. But since then they have proven to be the best resource for information on football prospects out there. They also have a nice compilation of JUCO recruiting profiles, their basketball prospect lists are growing, and break out recruits into those who simply sign their letters of intent and early enrollees. Finally, 247 Sports is almost always the fastest to provide updates on the status of recruits.

  • Five Stars: 110 – 100
  • Four Stars: 99 – 90
  • Three Stars: 89 – 90
  • Two Stars: 79 – 70
  • Unranked: 0

Rivals

They have the largest database of the four primary websites for both football and basketball recruiting. It is also incredibly functional and easily allows users to drill down into the data for searching for a group of recruits based on a specific criteria (high school, commitment status, city, state, etc). They also provide very accurate reports on recruits as well as track them closely so when a commitment is made Rivals announces it quickly. Their numerical sub-rankings seem very fair and they even evaluate JUCO prospects.

  • Five Stars: 6.1
  • Four Stars: 6.0 – 5.8
  • Three Stars: 5.7 – 5.5
  • Two Stars: 5.4 – 4.9
  • Unranked: –

ESPN

The ‘Worldwide Leader in Sports’ has always provided grades to their recruits but have only recently added stars. They also have a solid database and seem to update their rankings pretty frequently. However there are large gaps in their coverage for non-AQ schools and a good majority of their recruits seem to go unrated. They also don’t seem to update the list of scholarships offered to recruits. They are moving in the right direction but they have quite a ways to go to catch up to Rivals and 247 Sports.

  • Five Stars: 100 – 85
  • Four Stars: 84.99 – 79.5
  • Three Stars: 79.49 – 75
  • Two Stars: 74.99 – 68
  • One Star: 67.99 – 55
  • Unranked: 45

Scout

The least effective of the recruiting sites. Scout does not provide nationwide recruiting evaluations like the other three in that they seem to be the last to update the profiles of their prospects. Really it depends on the school a recruit commits to whether or not it will be announced by Scout. For a school like Louisville, for example, who is in the Big East their commitments seem to get announced days or even weeks ahead of Cincinnati’s. I’m not spiteful but a website operated by a giant like Fox should have more overarching coverage for all schools. This website also does not provide numerical sub-rankings like the others and seems to very liberal in handing out ‘stars’.
